Some Poetry by Shongo

Three short poems by Shongo evoke the harsh glare and dust of the Shimmering Flats, an owl’s bloody night hunt, and a young hunter’s chant before shooting a plainstrider.

The Shimmering Flats

Coming down out of the Needles
the light hits your eyes
like a mallet
like a shovel in the face

then you're breathing in
thorns
bits of crystal sand
scraping down your throat
every step you take
kicks up another cloud of
misery

Earthmother, what were you thinking?

Teldarasa

Cool night comes
on feathers and sharp talons
Teldarasa!
another rabbit meets
a bloody, tasty end

Young Shongo's Hunting Chant

Got a shell in the gun
ooah, ooah
Plainstrider in my sights
ooah, ooah
Sun shining on my back
ooah, ooah
Gonna eat good tonight!
Shoot! ooah
